Aldersgate United Methodist Church

In 1885, North Randall Church, a small church at Warrensville Center Road and Emery Road was organized.  During the next 40 years, despite some difficult times the church increased in membership. In 1924, the congregation of the North Randall Church joined the Methodist Episcopal faith. With the help of lay members and dedicated pastors, the church continued to grow through the Depression years and World War II. In 1952, the congregation merged with Elsmere-Lee Methodist Church and was renamed Aldersgate Methodist Church in honor of the street in London on which John Wesley had his “heart warming” experience. The congregation purchased five acres of land on Eastwood Lane, which is the site of the present building.  The building was completed and dedicated 1957.  The East Educational Wing – Van Horn Hall, was opened two years later in 1959.  In 1994, the educational wing was dedicated to Bishop James S. Thomas, then Bishop of the East Ohio Conference. Under several pastorates, Aldersgate became a presence in the Warrensville Heights neighborhood, reaching out to the community, providing a variety of ministries, and providing opportunities for community groups to meet. Warrensville Heights Public Library, as well as future city developments. The YMCA branch and the library are part of Phase I of the mixed-use Town Center project. As customers came into Heinen’s new shop for their meat purchases, they began asking him to carry groceries as well. The inspiration for The Effective Leadership Academy (ELA)  began when Founder and Executive Director Flo Brett, recognized the struggle of newly promoted corporate professionals who were expected to assume leadership positions, but lacked the necessary required traits.  Brett, a former nurse and executive training program manager, developed and led an intensive adult leadership-training program with outstanding results. Through her own personal experiences with her local educational community, Brett quickly identified a significant gap in student leadership training within the middle school and secondary school environment. Taking lessons learned and successes from her corporate curricula, Brett adapted it to serve the needs of students in grades 5-12, college students and educators to ensure they receive essential life skills during their most formative years. The concept of training young people, and those who impact the lives of young people with essential life skills led to the creation of ELA in 2008.
