Black History Month Salute: Breaking Chains Inc.

This week, we recognize Chamber member Breaking Chains Inc., a HUD-certified counseling agency started in 2007 offering assistance to individuals interested in financial management and preparing themselves for homeownership.

Founder and Executive Director Jackie Huggins-Jones started the financial literacy and housing agency to combat the troubling statistic that 85 percent of the adult U.S. population has little to no understanding of how to maintain healthy credit or how to plan for financial savings. As a Black woman herself, seeing African Americans struggling to grasp concepts of proper financial management led her to want to “break the cycle of being a slave to debt.”

“Once you find your passion, it’s not a job anymore,” Huggins-Jones says. “It’s something that you enjoy doing. The benefits of it are you are able to create and put things in place that you feel will be beneficial for your client. The main thing is that you are able to do things and help people.”

Breaking Chains offers services across the 88 counties of Ohio, and has been received the Top Counseling Agency Award six years in a row from The Ohio Housing Finance Agency.
